Everything is done or played seriously, with people behaving as they would in real life with realistic reactions to the unfolding events, and said events have serious, lasting consequences. The main appeal of LOGH is its ability to convey a sense of scale and history, able to make viewers believe that they are witness an epic struggle for the future of humankind. The elements of epic space operas are prevalent: warfare on a galactic scale, intrigues in the highest levels of government, plots and conspiracies that could span centuries.

It was, for all intents and purposes, a sprawling epic like no other, running over 110 OVA episodes between 1988-2000, with various 'Gaiden' series of prequels and side-stories and two feature-length anime films. Starting out as a series of Seiun Award winning science fiction novels written by Yoshiki Tanada throughout 1980s, it was quickly picked up by producers and turned into an anime series. He found himself becoming the hero of the Alliance, saving it from conquest by the Empire time and time again even as he is hampered, almost at every turn, by the bloated and corrupted republican government behind him.īefore long, these two would find or draw many capable people to their sides, and together, their deeds and accomplishments would alter the course of human history, for both good or ill.
